BIOLOGicalSignificance:ExpandCollapse

Gamma-aminobutyricacid(GABA)istheprimaryinhibitoryneurotransmitterinthecentralnervoussystem,causingahyperpolarizationofthemembranethroughtheopeningofaCl−channelassociatedwiththeGABAAreceptor(GABAA-R)subtype.GABAplasmamembranetransporters(GATs)influencesynapticneurotransmissionbyhighaffinityuptakeandreleaseofGABA.Todate,fourdistinctGABAtransportershavebeenidentified:GAT-1,GAT-2,GAT-3,andBGT-1.GAT-1,themostabundantofthetransporters,isfoundpredominantlyinneurons,butalsoinsomespecializedglia(Minellietal.,1995).GAT-1isthoughttoplayakeyroleinepileptogenesis(Zhaoetal.2003).
