BIOLOGicalSignificance:ExpandCollapse

MeCP2(Methyl-CpGBindingProtein2)isachromosomalproteinthatbindstomethylatedDNA. Itcanbindspecificallytoasinglemethyl-CpGpairandisnotinfluencedbysequencesflankingthemethyl-CpGs. MeCP2hasbeenshowntomediatetranscriptionalrepressionthroughinteractionwithhistonedeacetylaseandthecorepressorSIN3A(Nanetal.,1998). DefectsinMeCP2arethecauseofRettsyndrome(RTT)(Amiretal.,1999). RTTisanX-linkeddominantdisease;itisaprogressiveneurologicdevelopmentaldisorderandoneofthemostcommoncausesofmentalretardationinfemales.
