Peripherinisa~57kDaintermediatefilamentsubunitfoundinitiallyinsensoryneuronsoftheperipheralnervoussystems,whichgivestheproteinitsname.Subsequently,peripherinwasfoundinsomesensoryandotherneuronsofthecentralnervoussystemandalsoinPC12cells.Peripherinisalsoexpressedincertainneuroendocrinetumorsandintheinsulinproducingcellsofthepancreas.PeripherinbelongstotheClassIIIfamilyofintermediatefilamentsubunitswhichalsoincludesvimentin,glialfibrillaryacidicprotein(GFAP)anddesmin.Incontrasttotheneurofilaments,peripherinisstronglyup-regulatedafternerveinjury(1).Antibodiestoperipherincanbeusedinidentifying,classifying,andstudyingneuronsthroughoutthenervoussystem.PeripherinisalsoagooddiagnosticMarkerforballoonedaxonsseeninLouGehrig’sdisease(Amyotrophiclateralsclerosis)andsomeneuronallyderivedtumors(2).Autoantibodiestoperipherinarefrequentlyseenintheseraofpatientswithdiabetes(3).Peripherinisnotrelatedtoperipherin/RDS,aproteinofthephotoreceptoroutermembranemutationsofwhicharecausativeofcertainformsofslowretinaldegeneration.
