SynapsinIplaysakeyroleinsynapticplasticityinbrain(Fengetal.,2002;Nayaketal.,1996).ThiseffectisdueinlargeparttotheABIlityofthesynapsinstoregulatetheavailabilityofsynapticvesiclesforrelease.Inadditiontoitsroleinplasticity,theexpressionofsynapsinIisapreciseindicatorofsynapseformation(MooreandBernstein,1989;Stoneetal.,1994).Thus,synapsinIimmunocytochemistryprovidesavaluabletoolforthestudyofsynaptogenesis.Theroleofsynapsininsynapticplasticityandinsynaptogenesisisregulatedbyphosphorylation(Jovanovicetal.,2001;Kaoetal.,2002).Serine9isthesiteonsynapsinIthatisphosphorylatedbycAMP-dependentproteinkinaseandbycalciumcalmodulinkinaseI(Czerniketal.,1987).Phosphorylationofthissiteisthoughttoregulatesynapticvesiclefunctionandneuriteoutgrowth(Kaoetal.,2002).
